Video made with a mobile phone in the streets of the city of Johannesburg.

Artist residency within the Southern African Foundation for Contemporary Art, Johannesburg - Knysna, South Africa, 16 January - 27 March 2018.

Watch the video on a cell phone and walk with it following the instructions of directions.

The meeting with the city of Johannesburg is an extraordinary experience for me. The studio of the August House where I live and work is located in the center of the city, in the District of Doornfontein. This district is considered very difficult. It is very highly recommended not to walk, for white or for anyone displaying signs of wealth. Even by car this neighborhood is avoided by the inhabitants of Joburg. Taxis and the UBers... come backwards when you order them. In fact it is the only way to get in or out of the House here: the Uber depositing me outside the door or recovering me. Sometimes this UBer ride is only for a few hundred meters in order to arrive in a district (which is limited to one or two blocks) or a secure Street (safe). Therefore, here is the walking completely impossible or constraint !

This constraint opens many questions about me, about this city and its inhabitants. I understand it as a compulsion to meet and Exchange, a restrain in discovery and sharing. I tell myself that this constraint leads to many others.

I have a feeling that the white-black border is maintained by this  no possibility of access to a need and a basic right: walk. How build a society together when you cannot walk together !
